I just got Leupold Gr 10-20X40Mm Compact Spotting Scope Brown 61080 Mixed opinion, changed how we use itBy PlankwingMy wife and I (birders) got this when they first came to market (2002 or so?). We used it some hand held which worked to some extent at various powers. However, we already had Canon IS binos so were used to the stable image obtained with them so we didn’t find this scope compelling hand held. We put it on a mono-pod which my wife already used as a hiking stick and it was then more usable. Even so, the IS binos always trumped this scope so it effectively went to storage. Fast forward to early 2010. We bought a Kowa TSN-883 Prominar ED 88mm spotting scope and soon found it difficult to “find” the desired subject because of the angled eyepiece. The “finder” line cast into the side of the shade was nearly useless for aligning on a subject, not the least of which was having to bend down and try to move the scope while feeling nearly off balance. Then there was the problem of dominant eye … I am “left” eyed … plus my neck injury … solution needed.The languishing Leupold scope captured my eye when rummaging through our photo equipment and it seemed it could be used as a finder scope for the Kowa. With a bit of planing, some aluminum, the tools at hand, and a couple hours of work, I built a mount that holds the Leupold above the Kowa. It is sized so that the eyepiece of the Leupold is in the same arc as the eyepiece of the Kowa, so a simple tilt of the head moves the eye from one scope to the other.
