The Different Kinds of Spray Painting Equipment

Ξ August 22nd, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Hvlp Spray |

A lot of people are on the lookout for spray painting equipment. This is because they’re now widely used for a lot of jobs. Back then, they were often used to paint cars. But nowadays, spray painting is very popular with residential, industrial and commercial jobs as well. This makes spray painting very versatile in addition to being effective.

So if you’re on the lookout for equipment, what are the things that you need? The most important spray painting equipment is the spray gun or paint sprayer. The conventional spray gun utilizes high air pressure in order to spray the paint. It’s the conventional paint sprayer that is also the most popular. This is because it’s the most effective and efficient especially for industrial uses.

A lot of people prefer it because it gives them the most control. It’s also perfect if you have huge demands. However, some people are turned off because it creates a lot of fog and a fog of paint is very unpleasant. It also uses a lot of air so if you don’t know how to use it, it can turn out to be an inefficient sprayer.

You can also use an HVLP paint sprayer. It’s similar to an air spray gun but the main difference is it uses more volume of air with lower pressure. This results to less overspray and this is the reason why US Environmental Agencies require spray painters to use an HVLP paint sprayer for bigger jobs. Automotive and aerospace companies are the number one users of this spray painting equipment.

You can choose to use a compliant paint sprayer if you want to have the best of both worlds. It produces a fine finish that can be attained by an air paint sprayer but it has an HVLP‘s transfer efficiency. On the other hand, an airless and air-assisted airless sprayer is for you if you’re looking for a sprayer that can apply the fastest.

The newer sprayers are the electrostatic spray guns. They use electricity in order to charge the particles. It can use air, airless, air-assisted or even rotary atomizers which make it very versatile. To add to its versatility, you can turn off the electricity.

It would be a good idea to buy a complete package for your spray painting equipment. However, the parts are available separately just in case you need a replacement. You can buy tanks, hoses, pumps and regulators. You can buy from good brands like Graco, Nordson, Binks or DeVilbiss. Check out the options available for you so you can have your spray painting needs answered.

You may also want to look for a airless spray equipment to get the full picture.

Choosing Interior Paints Low in VOCs

Ξ August 20th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Hvlp Spray |

The Environmental Protection Agency has warned that chemical vapors released from paint and many other household products “may have short- and long-term adverse health effects.” According to the EPA, exposure to these gases, known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), may cause eye, nose and throat irritation; headaches and nausea. Studies suggest that long term exposure may result in liver, kidney, or central nervous system damage. VOCs can come from thousands of household products, including cleaning supplies, craft materials, glue, permanent markers.

No one is sure what level of VOCs is safe. For paints, the government has capped VOC levels at 250 grams per liter for flat finish paints and 380 grams for other finishes. Some agencies are setting much lower levels as their standards. In light of the possible risks, it seems prudent, especially for those with asthma or allergies or other risk factors, to keep exposure to VOCs to a minimum whenever possible.

VOCs are released during application of paints and for years afterward from the paint on walls and ceilings. VOCs have been found indoors in concentrations up to ten times higher than outdoors. Many people, concerned about exposure to VOCs, have turned to products with lower VOC levels. Fortunately a great number of low-VOC and zero-VOC paints are available from most leading paint companies. Using these paints not only reduces health risks, but also decreases unpleasant odors and air pollution. Fortunately the cost of these environmentally friendly paints is usually comparable to traditional paints.

One way to check for paints that are low in VOCs is to look for the Green Seal. Green Seal, an independent, science-based environmental certification agency, certifies products which it has tested and found to be eco-friendly. The 2010 Green Seal standards for paint include the requirement that it contains less than 50 grams of VOC per liter for flat finishes and less than 100 grams for primers and non-flat finishes before colorants are added. Colorants are added after VOCs are measured and may add as much as 50 grams per liter, although usually much less. Paints in these ranges are referred to as Low-VOC. The Green Seal further indicates that the paint does not contain a number of other toxic chemicals. Some paints, which also may have the Green Seal, contain less than 5 grams per liter and are known as Zero-VOC. Natural paints, a third category, contain no VOCs.

Another certification program is overseen by Greenguard Environmental Institute, an industry independent testing organization. Their Greenguard certification indicates that paints have met their stringent standards for VOC emissions.

Below is a sample of some of the more popular paint manufacturers and their eco-friendly paints. There are many other excellent low and zero VOC paints on the market. Check the paint can label to find its VOC levels.

Natural paints, as their name indicates, are made from natural ingredients such as plant oils and resins, plant dyes, bees wax, and minerals such as chalk and clay. They are generally considered the safest for the environment, but may not provide the coverage and durability many people expect. Among popular brands are Green Planet Paints, Ecos Organic Paints (in the United Kingdom), Eco Design’s BioShield, and Real Milk Paint Company.

How Painters Can Reduce VOC Levels

The EPA has outlined a number of ways that painters can reduce the release of VOCs during the painting process:

1. Use water base paints and products that contain a higher amount of solids.

2. Use proper spraying equipment, such as high-volume, low-pressure (HVLP) sprayers, and spraying techniques that use less paint and therefore release fewer VOCs.

3. Store paint in airtight containers and only open them when in actual use.

4. Use cleaning techniques that minimize release of contaminants, such as re-using cleaning solvents, starting painting with light colors and moving toward darks to reduce the amount of cleaning needed between colors.

Choosing paints low in VOCs and following EPA guidelines while applying these paints can greatly reduce the levels of harmful vapors in your house, make it easier to move back into a room soon after painting, and improve the environment.

The Basics of Wood Restoration

Ξ August 13th, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Hvlp Spray |

Although we don’t think about it much, the Second Law of Thermodynamics has an impact on our lives. Basically, it means anything left on its own will start to decline. The good news is that we can fight back through maintenance, such as by using the process of wood restoration. Such processes can prevent or perhaps, even reverse, the process of deterioration. Sometimes, it can even restore the wood to its original state!

Truth be told, wood is much more vulnerable to its environment than we could ever imagine. Some of its major enemies include temperature, sunlight, and even Father Time itself. These influences on wood can produce a variety of unwanted results, including warping, rotting, splitting, and buildups of moss and mildew. However, using some basic wood restoration methods can work wonders on various types of wood products.

Meet Your Enemy: Weathering

While living trees thrive on sunlight, it can have a devastating impact on wood products. For instance, ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun cause something called lignin in the wood to weaken, thus making the wood’s fibers weaker. Also, the sun can cause an unbalanced heating of wood. For instance, the topside of a horizontal board on a deck could become dryer faster than the bottom side.

Other weathering enemies of wood exist. In cold regions, cycles of freezing and thawing can cause additional stress on wood, thus creating the need for wood restoration. Additionally, damp wood can invite fungal spores to fasten themselves onto the wood and then grow. Unfortunately, pressure treating of wood has none-to-little success in preventing the increase of fungal spores.

Cleaning Wood From Unsophisticated to Uphill

The process of cleaning wood to restore its natural appearance can involve different processes. These methods can range from a basic pressure washing, to a complicated process involving special chemicals and several steps. It is recommended that novices only handle wood restoration tasks when the impact of weathering on wood is moderate and even.

Pressure Washing 101

If you decide to use pressure washing in order to restore wood, consider using these particular techniques:

Start from the bottom and then work upwards.

  1. Avoid using too much pressure.
  2. Shift the wand along the wood’s grain, rather than across it.
  3. Maintain the wand at the same angle to the surface.
  4. Keep the distance uniform from the nozzle to the surface.
  5. Clean off any remaining thin films of dirt by using a soft brush.
  6. Use additional treatment when wood seems to emit water.

As you go along, you will learn more about what to watch for and what to do about it. For instance, you may find barbecue grease on your deck. What do you do about it? You can try a water-rinse, automotive degreaser – many have used it to great results! Other specialty products for cleaning are also available. Typically, you spray them on and use a pressure washer to power-rinse afterwards. Examples include brighteners, stain removers, and strippers.

What about chlorine bleach? Should it be used? Conventional wisdom dictates bleach should not be used by itself, but always in combination with the right detergent. Sure, bleach can remove stains and kill mildew, but it’s not a very effective cleaning agent. Rust and any other type of stain that’s bleach-resistant respond very well to oxalic cleaners that are acid-based.

Clean and Then Go?

Some power-washing contractors add preservation techniques to their services while others simply limit their work to appearance restoration. Are you considering adding preservation services to your repertoire? Here are some of its pros and cons.

PROS

  1. You can get additional business from each customer.
  2. You can increase your customer base because you can get clients who only need cleaning, clients who only need protection, and clients who need both.
  3. Many customers require need finishes applied.

CONS

  1. You may have to return some other day to coat or seal.
  2. You can do pressure-washing even when it rains, but coating work is entirely weather-dependent.
  3. You won’t get paid until you finish everything.

Finishing What You Start

When performing wood restoration, you should be aware that three types of finish products are available: water repellant products, wood preservation products, and stain products. Typically, the regular paint job has a lifespan of 5 to 10 years while water repellent, stain, or preservative protection lasts only 2 to 3 years.

Water repellent products have two main drawbacks. Even after applying them carefully, water can still force itself into the tiny pores of the wood. Additionally, water repellent only provides short-term protection.

Meanwhile, wood preservative products can safeguard wood from a wide variety of things, including mildew, insects, termites, or decay. When buying wood that’s been pressure treated, keep in mind that it already has protection against insects, termites, and decay.

Finally, stain products are basically paints that manufactures have thinned down. Besides looking attractive, stains also provide the same UV protection that paints do. Look for stains with “titanium dioxide” and stains of solid colors, to maximize the amount of UV protection.

Here are some tips to help you apply the finish successfully:

  1. Always check on manufacturers’ directions because more often than not, these provide application tips.
  2. Doubtful about the possible results? Do a test patch!
  3. After pressure washing, check on the wood to make sure it has dried.
  4. Do not apply the finish in direct sunlight.
  5. Don’t worry too much about coating your deck’s undersides. In most cases, this isn’t necessary.
  6. Use cardboard spray shields to help you mask the more “difficult” areas.
  7. Remove drips or oversprays while these are still wet.
  8. Depending on your purpose, a professional-type drop cloth can do better work than plastic sheeting.
  9. Before you brush out, be sure to spray on first.
  10. Thinking of using an airless sprayer? Go ahead! It can work very well if it’s properly set up. Keep in mind, though, that if you are spraying watery liquid, an airless sprayer can create quite a lot of misting.
  11. Considering an HVLP sprayer? Try it! It’s a great choice.
  12. Pump-up sprayers work well, but they’re not very quick and efficient on large jobs.

Wood has many enemies that can make it weak or unsightly. However, you can battle back by using various effective wood restoration products and techniques. It won’t always be easy work, but all the hard work will be worth it once you see the look of joy on a homeowner’s face.

The best part? Because you gave the homeowner’s deck a new lease on life, that satisfied homeowner will come running to you every two years or so!

Tools to Make Your House Painting Jobs Easier

Ξ August 1st, 2010 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Hvlp Spray |

If you own a house, I’ll bet there is a project on the “to-do list” (or the honey-do list) that calls for paint. For most of us, the difference between any of these painting projects is the amount of paint that it’s going to take to get the job done. The rest of the job will depend on the kind of tools you have to do the job.

1. Tool Quality

When some people paint they buy the cheapest tools to do the job and suffer the consequences later. Yes, you can buy foam brushes and rollers. You can get cheap brushes that will apply paint but the quality will suffer and it will also be harder to do the work and take you extra time. You think it will save you time because you can just throw away the cheap tools and buy more next time. It doesn’t work that way. Tools are tools and the better ones do the job better, quicker and cheaper in the long run than the throw-away kind.

You can choose from three different types of paint applicators, the brush, the roller, and the sprayer. Each one has it’s own use and each one takes a different type of expertise. They all do the same thing though, they are a paint applicating product. They are different in cost also, so lets take a look at what we can chose from.

2. The Brush

Choosing a brush will depend on what kind of paint your going to use. If it’s a latex paint then you’ll want a latex brush. If your going to use oil base paint you need a brush specifically for oil base paint. With out getting too technical about the hairs of the brush we’ll just say that there are two basic bristles in brushes, and they are synthetic, which are the most commonly used especially by armature or part-time painters. The other kind of bristles are animal hair bristles. These are good for the long run if they are taken care of and used properly. After determining what the base is of your paint is look at the paint store for that base on the brush package. It will tell you if the brush is made for oil or latex base paint.

The brush is the tool of choice for smaller surfaces and trim or door and window frames, but with new technology these days there are ways to paint larger surfaces. You can save a lot of time by using a roller or spray painter to do jobs that are too big for one man and a brush. Although you need to watch what and how you use these new tools, they will do a wonderful job when the choice is proper.

3. The Roller

As we mentioned above quality is the key to a good job and good or better brushes should be chosen, the same thing can be said about roller’s. Cheap ones will self destruct after a job or two. Most don’t make it through one job without spreading roller threads in the paint. The better rollers will stand up to many cleanings also.

There are many types of rollers available. Some with patterns in the body of the roller that can put cartoon figures or designs in the paint. All of these tools have their own place in the painting procedures.

4. The Paint Sprayer

There are different types and styles of Paint Sprayers. Some are air, some are electric some use vibration all to get the job done as efficient as possible. If your budget allows it, it is just the ticket for the bigger jobs. Even the part-timer can rent a paint sprayer to do the fence or the outside of the house or maybe the inside of the garage. For smaller painting needs an Airbrush can also be used to do thin straight lines and difficult designs that would be a challenge even for a small brush. All it takes is practice.

Remember the tool is your way to the end of the goal. So make the right decision and get a quality tool no mater what you want to use, because it will make the job go quicker and look better.

Gaffer’s Tape

Ξ July 28th, 2010 | → Comments Off | ∇ Hvlp Spray |

Show biz is all about the glamour, flawlessness and fame. But trust me, it all doesn’t come on a silver platter. A lot of work goes to ensure things appear as perfect as can be. This is where the the Gaffer tape which is undisputedly efficient comes in handy.

Made of cloth with a synthetic rubber adhesive, a touch of custom colors and of fluorescent types and a matte finish, it ensures that there is complete camouflage and a large depletion of equipment is achieved on show staging. It is also used in the lighting department of film and show production.

Unlike the duct tape which breaks easily and leaves residue behind after usage, the Gaffer tape is not only waterproof but is also invisibly integrated in the stage background. This is simply because it is entirely made of cotton and can also be evenly broken by bare hands without the usage of cutting tools, which is certainly not the case with the duct tape.

The most basic model of this tape is the two-inch wide roll that can be fragmented into pieces as large as an inch. You would also find it interesting to know that owing to its good work and efficiency, terms have also originated from its root. Ever heard of the term “cables that are gaffed” which are used for the camouflaging or isolation of certain prop or decor items for the simple reason of hiding technical details from the audience? Don’t wonder any more since you now know where its name is derived from.
