If you own a house, I’ll bet there is a project on the “to-do list” (or the honey-do list) that calls for paint. For most of us, the difference between any of these painting projects is the amount of paint that it’s going to take to get the job done. The rest of the job will depend on the kind of tools you have to do the job.
1. Tool Quality
When some people paint they buy the cheapest tools to do the job and suffer the consequences later. Yes, you can buy foam brushes and rollers. You can get cheap brushes that will apply paint but the quality will suffer and it will also be harder to do the work and take you extra time. You think it will save you time because you can just throw away the cheap tools and buy more next time. It doesn’t work that way. Tools are tools and the better ones do the job better, quicker and cheaper in the long run than the throw-away kind.
You can choose from three different types of paint applicators, the brush, the roller, and the sprayer. Each one has it’s own use and each one takes a different type of expertise. They all do the same thing though, they are a paint applicating product. They are different in cost also, so lets take a look at what we can chose from.
2. The Brush
Choosing a brush will depend on what kind of paint your going to use. If it’s a latex paint then you’ll want a latex brush. If your going to use oil base paint you need a brush specifically for oil base paint. With out getting too technical about the hairs of the brush we’ll just say that there are two basic bristles in brushes, and they are synthetic, which are the most commonly used especially by armature or part-time painters. The other kind of bristles are animal hair bristles. These are good for the long run if they are taken care of and used properly. After determining what the base is of your paint is look at the paint store for that base on the brush package. It will tell you if the brush is made for oil or latex base paint.
The brush is the tool of choice for smaller surfaces and trim or door and window frames, but with new technology these days there are ways to paint larger surfaces. You can save a lot of time by using a roller or spray painter to do jobs that are too big for one man and a brush. Although you need to watch what and how you use these new tools, they will do a wonderful job when the choice is proper.
3. The Roller
As we mentioned above quality is the key to a good job and good or better brushes should be chosen, the same thing can be said about roller’s. Cheap ones will self destruct after a job or two. Most don’t make it through one job without spreading roller threads in the paint. The better rollers will stand up to many cleanings also.
There are many types of rollers available. Some with patterns in the body of the roller that can put cartoon figures or designs in the paint. All of these tools have their own place in the painting procedures.
4. The Paint Sprayer
There are different types and styles of Paint Sprayers. Some are air, some are electric some use vibration all to get the job done as efficient as possible. If your budget allows it, it is just the ticket for the bigger jobs. Even the part-timer can rent a paint sprayer to do the fence or the outside of the house or maybe the inside of the garage. For smaller painting needs an Airbrush can also be used to do thin straight lines and difficult designs that would be a challenge even for a small brush. All it takes is practice.
Remember the tool is your way to the end of the goal. So make the right decision and get a quality tool no mater what you want to use, because it will make the job go quicker and look better.
