RED HAT LINUX 8.0 PROFESSIONAL : Like the Personal edition, Red Hat Linux 8.0 Professional shares the same innovative, unified Bluecurve interface of Gnome 2 and KDE 3.03. Also included are three installation CDs, two source CDs, a documentation CD (though Red Hat’s documentation hasn’t had the makeover the interface has), and a multimedia and office applications CD. It also comes with the whole lot on a single DVD (no disc changing) and a small administrator tools CD.

The main difference between the Personal and Professional editions of Red Hat Linux 8.0 is that Red Hat Linux 8.0 Professional is aimed at those running servers and/or developing software. This version also offers a lot more paper documentation than you get with the Personal edition, including a network administrator guide. This makes it easier for those without advanced skills to start networking, serving, and developing. However, the software supplied on the three installation discs is identical in both versions.

Red Hat Linux 8.0 Professional comes without MP3 support, without RealOne Player, and without a default CD burner. It uses the same Anaconda installation program (somewhat cleaned up from earlier versions and with a more logical sequence of actions), and has the same contempt for many older PCs–especially those without AMD or Intel processors.

Hardware detection and setup is excellent for most common cards and devices, including USB devices. It’s especially hot on networking hardware. However, because many hardware manufacturers still don’t support Linux, new types of devices and very old devices can be problematic. If in doubt, check the supported hardware list on Red Hat’s site.

Apart from missing multimedia support, Red Hat Linux 8.0 Professional doesn’t do the kind of simple things that make life easier for new users. For example, most new Linux users come from Windows. Having the installation script add an icon to mount an existing Windows disk or partition is trivial and makes it simple for new users to access existing documents and files. But here, you’re immediately stuck in a Linux-only universe where the first thing you have to do is edit fstab to get at your old files.

On the plus side, almost everything in Linux can now be configured from the graphical control panel, a far cry from just a couple of years ago. You may never need to edit a raw configuration file. Overall, with its far better paper documentation and wider range of installation options, Red Hat Linux 8.0 Professional is actually a better buy than the Personal edition for those new to Linux. Wer erwartet, dass die Red Hat Linux Professional Workstation auch nur annähernd so komplett ausfällt, wie die bisherige Red Hat 9.0, der irrt gewaltig. Das System ist zugeschnitten auf User, die ausschließlich mit Gnome arbeiten wollen und das vorzugsweise in der Fassung, die Red Hat für die beste hält. KDE ist dementsprechend nur spartanisch und ungeliebt eingepflegt, aber das kennen wir ja von Red Hat. Der Wahn, ausschließlich Gnome zu berücksichtigen geht aber bei Red Hat WS 3 soweit, dass auch Programme rausfallen, für die es kaum einen sinnvollen Ersatz unter Gnome gibt. So sucht man z. B. xcdroast vergeblich auf den beigelegten CDs, Red Hat tröstet einen damit, dass man die Extras-CD beigelegt findet, die immerhin ganze 3 (!) RPMs enthält, die sich um Java-Entwicklung drehen. Juhu!

Alles in allem ist die Distribution nicht komplett, ich frage mich warum Pakete wie der Midnight Commander und andere rausgefallen sind; die Serverdienste sind ohnehin schon stark beschnitten, aber die Distribution nennt sich schließlich auch Workstation. Schade nur, dass man dem Benutzer nicht einmal die Möglichkeit gibt, zum Beispiel einen bind zu installieren. Vor allem zu diesem doch recht hohen Preis. Wofür also die 9 CDs frage ich mich? Auf der alten Red Hat 9.0, die ich für lau aus dem Internet laden konnte, fanden sich 1440 RPM-Pakete, auf der aktueln Red Hat WS 3 finden sich 1044 RPM-Pakete. Tatsache ist also, dass Red Hat den Umfang um mehr als ein Viertel gekürzt hat. Und das für den Preis von knapp € 100,-. D. h. ich muß noch mehr Programme aus dem Internet runterladen und kompilieren bzw. installieren und die Programme werden auch nicht über das Red Hat Network mitgepflegt.

Das, was Red Hat hier abgeliefert hat, hält keinen Vergleich zu SUSE und Debian stand, Debian liefert den vollen Umfang des Red Hat Networks kostenlos, auch SUSE liefert Sicherheitspatches ohne Kosten aus. Bei Red Hat kostet dieser Service pro Rechner ,- im Jahr und natürlich sind die alten “Entitlements” (so heißen bei Red Hat die Abos für das Red Hat Network) nicht mehr weiter anwendbar. Und natürlich, wie bereits erwähnt, werden nur die Programme, die Red Hat mitliefert über das Red Hat Network gepflegt.

Auch die Aktualität der Programme läßt stark zu wünschen übrig, auch und gerade bei den Programmen für den Desktop, also eigentlich dem zentralen Fokus dieser sehr speziellen Distribution. Open Office liegt in der Version 1.0.2 vor, aktuell wäre 1.1. – wer erwartet, dass er nun die aktuelle Version über das (teuer bezahlte) Red Hat Network bekommt – Fehlanzeige. Sehr spaßig ist auch, dass auf der Packung mit “CD- und DVD-Authoring” geworben wird, dies aber ausschließlich aus den Kommandozeilentools besteht. Das ist Komfort.

Auch sehr nervend ist, dass Red Hat einfach am Kernel rumbasteln MUSS. Sie können nicht anders. Den Kernel als 2.4. zu bezeichnen, ist eigentlich eine Frechheit; Red Hat hat so viele Backports aus 2.6. implementiert, dass man ihn eigentlich als 2.4-unstable. bezeichnen müßte. Was soll das? Treiber von Fremdanbietern sind nur unter Schwierigkeiten zu installieren und für den Laien ist das Ganze sicherlich eine totale Unmöglichkeit. Für eine Distribution, die für den “stabilen und langfristigen” Einsatz vorgesehen ist, ist das wahrscheinlich nicht die klügste Entscheidung.

Also: Finger weg.

Markt und Technik: Aufatmen in der Red-Hat-Gemeinde: Der Marktführer wird auch weiterhin eine Boxed-Version seiner Linux-Distribution anbieten. Hauptzielgruppe des Red Hat Professional Workstation getauften Pakets sind Privatanwender und Gewerbetreibende.

Nachdem der Marktführer sein bisheriges Desktop-Linux in das freie Fedora-Projekt überführt hatte, befürchteten viele Heimanwender bereits, sie müssten in Zukunft ganz auf den Support des Red Hat Networks verzichten. Dies ist jedoch nicht der Fall: Red Hat Professional Workstation bietet 30 Tage Installations-Support per Telefon sowie ein Jahr Online-Updates für das System und sämtliche mitgelieferten Anwendungen. Das letztgenannte Feature sorgt auf komfortable Weise für ständige Aktualität und dürfte einer der Gründe für den Erfolg der Red-Hat-Distribution sein.

Die Neuinstallation geht im Allgemeinen zügig und (dank grafischer Unterstützung) auch für Einsteiger problemlos vonstatten. Exotische oder sehr neue Hardware wird freilich nicht immer erkannt. Nach abgeschlossener Installation empfängt den User der Bluecurve-Desktop — Red Hats integrierte Oberfläche, welche Elemente von Gnome wie von KDE in sich vereinigt. Technisch steht Bluecurve Gnome näher, so dass sich KDE-Benutzer etwas umstellen müssen. Linux-Einsteigern (und nicht nur denen) kommt die intuitive und leicht bedienbare Oberfläche gleichwohl sehr entgegen. Ohne Probleme gelingt auch die DSL-gestützte Kontaktaufnahme mit dem Internet. Die notwendigen Sicherheitseinstellungen lassen sich über eine Personal Firewall äußerst einfach konfigurieren.

Red Hat Professional Workstation basiert softwareseitig nicht auf der bisherigen Retail-Version, sondern auf der schlankeren Enterprise-Linie des Unternehmens. Entsprechend wenig Spiele und Multimedia-Tools finden sich auf den mitgelieferten CDs. Basierend auf dem Kernel 2.4.21 (der freilich, wie bei Rad Hat gewohnt, zahlreiche Patches enthält), bietet die Distribution ansonsten alles, was der Heimarbeiter benötigt. Das reicht vom hervorragenden Outlook-Ersatz Ximian Evolutionüber den Web-Browser Mozilla und die NetMeeting-Alternative GnomeMeeting bis zum MS Office-Konkurrenten OpenOffice und Linux-Standards wie The GIMP. Zu bemängeln ist lediglich, dass nicht alle Anwendungen in der aktuellsten Version vorliegen: OpenOffice etwa statt in Version 1.1 nur in der vorherigen Ausgabe 1.0.2.

Red Hat Professional Workstation erweist sich im Test als solides Arbeitstier. Die herausragenden Stärken liegen in einem bewährten Support-Konzept und der benutzerfreundlichen Bluecurve-Oberfläche. Klassischen Heimanwendern, die gesteigerten Wert auf eine umfangreiche Multimedia-Ausstattung legen, sei als Alternative SuSE Linux 9.0 empfohlen. –Holger Otto

Content is very neatly organized into 30 chapters (no repetition of same content as most of books do) last chapter is dedicated for troubleshooting.

All configurations are well explained in steps with appropriate example that makes it easy to remember & implement practically.
