Contrary to popular belief, writing is not an easy business to break into; the years of waiting and rejection are not exactly unheard of. So when I learned that Veronica Roth, a 2010 NU alum and creative writing major, was having her first book published, I was more than a little impressed. I grabbed a copy of her debut novel during the first break I found in schoolwork (which, let’s be honest, took some time) and settled down to read. Divergent starts off with a fairly straightforward premise. In humankind’s eventual future, our society has been torn to shreds, and the population has been divided into five factions, each based on a virtue that the faction’s founders thought most integral to preventing another disaster – Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peace), Erudite (intelligence), Candor (honesty) and Dauntless (courage). When an individual turns sixteen, they are given an aptitude test before choosing which faction they would like to dedicate their life to. However, Beatrice has been identified as Divergent – she is equally suited for Dauntless and Abnegation. After being told her results are dangerous and must be kept secret, Beatrice chooses Dauntless, leaving her family behind in Abnegation. And this, mind you, happens in the first [...]

WHAT YOUR HEADPHONES SAY ABOUT YOU
With finals coming up soon, the coffee shops and libraries on campus are sure to be overpopulated with headphones, our bitter companions during the few days during the quarter and the “study” week known as reading week when we actually do work relevant to our classes. These days, headphones have become just as important as any other article of clothing. Not only do they give you a great excuse to not talk to people when walking down Sheridan Road, they tell the world a little something about you. A pair of Bose noise-cancelling headphones might say that you are very studious. As if the library weren’t quiet enough, you resort to total noise cancellation in order to write your final AF-AM paper. However, they might also say that you do not prefer form over function. While they work like a charm, they are not the most attractive set you can strap over your head. On the other end of the spectrum are Skullcandy headphones. A Skullcandy set might tell someone you prefer to walk around with your headphones around your neck than you do over your ears, considering they are more art than a functional product (they break way too [...]
